Ekadashi is the eleventh lunar day after the new and full moon, occurring during the waxing and waning phases of the moon. This time is considered highly auspicious for fasting, meditation, improving spiritual practices, and minimizing bodily needs. Krishna devotees fast on these days to spend more time hearing and chanting about Krishna.

WHAT IS EKADASHI?

 

Ekadashi is the eleventh day of the lunar cycle, occurring both after Purnima (full moon) and Amavasya (new moon). Known as the day of Lord Hari, it is celebrated as one of the auspicious days suitable for fasting.

FOR WHOM IS EKADASHI?

Ekadashi should be observed by everyone according to the scriptures. It is recommended that individuals between the ages of eight and eighty fast on Ekadashi days.

WHAT SHOULD ONE AVOID ON EKADASHI?

  • Cereals, grains, and legumes (beans) must be avoided on Ekadashi.

  • Avoid using powdered asafoetida (hing), as it generally contains grains.

  • Sesame seeds are only allowed for Sat-tila Ekadashi.

DIFFERENT LEVELS OF EKADASHI FASTING

Ekadashi fasting can be observed at various levels as listed below, and one can choose a specific level of fasting based on their age, health, and various other factors related to their lifestyle.

  • The best way to observe Ekadashi fasting is to fast completely without consuming water. This is known as Nirjala fasting.

  • Those who cannot perform Nirjala fasting consume water while fasting.

  • If that is not possible, one can also consume some fruits and milk.

  • The next option is to consume non-grain foods such as vegetables (except onions and garlic), roots, nuts, etc., once a day during fasting.

  • The final option is to consume the mentioned foods three times a day, as on a regular day.

HOW TO OBSERVE EKADASHI VRATA?

We observe Ekadashi vrata from sunrise to sunrise.
Try to spend your time during Ekadashi engaging in spiritual activities such as -

  • Meditating on the pastimes of Lord Krishna or His various incarnations.

  • Chanting the Maha-Mantra.

  • Reading holy scriptures like the Bhagavad-Gita and Srimad-Bhagavatam.

  • Visiting a temple of Lord Vishnu / Krishna.

THE PURPOSE AND BENEFITS OF EKADASHI

  • During Ekadashi, more time can be dedicated to spiritual activities. This way, both external and internal purity can be achieved.

  • The true purpose of fasting on Ekadashi is to strengthen faith and love for Krishna. By observing fasting on Ekadashi, we can minimize bodily demands and utilize our time in the service of the Lord.

  • Observing Ekadashi vrata pleases the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Therefore, by regularly observing it, one can make progress in Krishna consciousness.

  • In the Brahma-vaivarta Purana, it is stated that fasting on Ekadashi frees one from all possible reactions to sinful activities and promotes progress in pious life.

BREAKING EKADASHI FAST

  • The Ekadashi fast must be broken the next day after sunrise.

  • If a complete fast (without water) has been observed, it should be broken by consuming grains.

  • In the case of Nirjala fasting, you can also break it with milk or fruits.
